Himalayan Monal Pheasant

(Lophophorus impeyanus)

 
Also called Impeyan Pheasant the Himalayan Monal pheasant has a rainbow of color. Males adorn metallic beetle sheens in red , blue , green, and yellows amungst their black and white. A patch of blue skin surrounds the eye. Females like many pheasants are mostly brown patterns. Impeyan are kept in captivity but are not for beginners. They require a large living space with dirt or sand floors as they like to dig. The aviary must be built so they do not dig out. They do well with grasses and plants in the aviary although their digging may kill of the vegitation. The chicks can be difficult to raise after incubation. Impeyan do not tolerate heat well and their aviary shoudl protect them from heat.
