Lady Amherst
(Chrysolophus amherstiae)
The Lady Amherst pheasant is distinctly beautiful. It's name borrowed from a Countess of Amherst whos husband first sent this remarkable pheasant to London in the early 1800's. Rich blues, greens, and vibrant reds and oranges layer over the vivid white feathering of the adult male. The female though less colorful carries her own distinct color patterns. Females are mostly unchanged in color pattern while the male takes two years to fully gain his color. Their docile nature has made them a fairly common avian pheasant. Lady Amherst are fairly hardy for weather conditions and are one of my favorites for a beginer pheasant. Lady Amherst will cross breed with other pheasants including the Red Golden and it is thought that a true full blooded Amherst is rare. We would recommend they not be cages with other species if their eggs are to be hatched.
