Midget White Turkeys

Midget White Turkey

Midget Whites are one of the rare heritage breeds of turkeys. Originally they were developed at the University of Massachusetts in the 1950's as a small table bird with a broad breast, however , the market for such a bird never developed. With lack of demand numbers of Midget Whites declined and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy considers the Midget White to be in a Critical conservation status. Never the less the Midget White has a quality tasting meat that in 2008 won a taste test over other turkeys and hearts of breeders nation wide.

Commonly the Midget White is considered a friendly bird. Their solid white color is striking. Owners of Midget Whites speak fairly highly of their turkeys and their personalities. They are often called great turkey for homesteads. Midget Whites unlike some turkeys can breed on their own and rear their young however many breeders remove the chicks. This making them desireable to owners who want to raise turkeys but do not wish to artificially inseminate like factories often have to with more meaty birds.
