Swinhoe

Swinhoe's Pheasant

(Lophura swinhoii)

The Stunning Swinhoe pheasant of Taiwan is a shy but magnificeint bird. The males dark feathers sheen with reds, greens, and blues. The female is less colorful but striking in it's own. The name Swinhoe come from British ornithologist Robert Swinhoe who in 1862 first described this pheasant in the Taiwanese mountains. Currently the numbers of Swinhoe's Pheasant are thought to be declining due to hunting for their vibrant plummage and deforrestation.
Despite their shy nature Swinhoe's Pheasants seem fairly hardy in captivity and thrive even in a beginners hands.
